The room and service were superior. An excellent wine list and one of the coolest bars to wait in make this restaurant a must see. If you can, avoid the food, and just stop in for a drink. You can still see the grand dining hall and experience the unique art without being seated. The meals we ordered we bland and poorly prepared. The server and manager comped the meals and apologized, quietly. If the food can match the level service it would be a killer experience.
Club Hopping 101:
Asia de Cuba - This place is so cool we couldn't get in....yet.
Ruby Skye -We liked this spot so much last week that we started here at 8:00pm. No, not to dance but to pay the cover and get our stamps, no waiting later. Great crowd and DJ Kevin Yost had us dancing right after dinner.
The Cellar - The best dance value in the city. Two rooms and two crowds for only $5 at the door. I ran into some of my friends from the Warfield ushers and since it was a holiday weekend the crowd size was just right. The cozy booths make for a nice place to cool off after dancing. The smaller "dark room" spins sexier grooves and has a nice collection of leather couches for kicking back. On the downside do not go anywhere near the bathrooms, 'nuff said.
Asia de Cuba - Okay we had to at least take a look at the "hottest" bar in SF. As I said earlier we were rebuffed when we tried to enter the first time, "..only hotel guest at this time please." Later the doorman recognized us from earlier as we walked past and said there was room at the bar if we wanted to go in. It was like walking into a movie. The environment was amazing, rich deep woods and funky art and water effects. I use the word environment since you really forget where you are once you enter the hotel and bar. The people were all beautiful and it seemed as if everyone was trying to be seen. Well we dug the room and headed right back out so we could dance. Maybe we'll come back before dinner and really explore this place.
Wicked at DNA - Now if you really want to test the toughness of your date take her here by cab. The previous locations were all located around Union Square, a very nice part of the city even stumbling around at 2 am. The DNA Lounge is located in an industrial part of town and the drive from Union Square takes you through "sketchy town". Once we were assured there would be cabs later at 4 we jumped into WICKED. The DNA lounge has a huge main room with leveled stages and a catwalk balcony to watch the action from above. In addition there are 3-5 other rooms/areas with alternative mixes going on. Almost like clubs within the club. By this time the bar is closed but the party is not over by a long shot. WICKED is a collection of dj's who spin an unique of dance/house music. Again we ran into some friends from the holiday parties and we danced in all the rooms until closing at 4:00.
Cafe Mason - A great well lit place to have some coffee and French toast before heading back out. The service was a little slow but the food was good and the other patrons were friendly and talkative. It seemed like this was a post club hangout, both the CHP and SFPD were enjoying coffee and breakfast while sizing up the patrons as they headed back out or home.
A full night out. If there was a downside it was only that my date had on a new pair shoes that turned out to be non-dance friendly. By the time we headed back to the car she was really in pain. We laughed as her feet breathed a sigh of relief when the shoes finally came off.
