Sunday after Turkey day, what to do before the new episode
of the Soprano's? I decided I needed to see the sunset on the ocean
today. I drove south and west to Seacliff Beach. I find the
ocean has a recharging effect on me. I discovered a new beach and made
a new friend. I love California for stuff like this. This
particular beach has a pier and a wreck below some sheer cliffs. The
day was a bit breezy but sunny. Parking was a breeze and I walked down
the beach then under the pier. I chased the water line back and forth
and I didn't care who saw me playing. The wreck in the breakers made
the beach look kinda ooky spooky. The tide was going out so I got to
take fresh steps and scan for the good shells. I wrestled a little
crab and for some reason the lone stump captured my imagination.
Driftwood, but this puppy had weight, this was serious driftwood, driftwood
with a mission, driftwood to be reckoned with.
On my way back to the rocks to watch the sunset I noticed a
girl on a mat drawing patterns in the sand. Sort of a fringe around
her straw beach mat. She was rocking to some music playing in her
headphones. I took a deep breathe and readied my camera. I asked
if I could take a few pictures of her sand art. Apparently that was
funny and sincere enough to allow us to hang for a bit. Luisa lives
right there at the beach (in a cottage actually) and she was just letting
her mind wander and watching the waves. Plus it was a real sunny day
and it is December so grab that sun while you can. Luisa turned out to
be a good egg.
She survived my questioning and it turns out we have some
similar interests. There was a time during this afternoon when we both
sat on the beach, saying nothing, just watching the sun slip beneath the
horizon behind a perfectly positioned boat. Neither of us had to say
anything, the ocean and the power of nature along with the simple truth of a
setting sun didn't escape our eyes. Once back from Nirvana we
continued to talk of music and snow, Amsterdam and reggae until it was time
for her to meet some friends for dinner. I had better hustle if I was
catch the east coast feed of the Soprano's on my digital cable. I started
the day bored and ended up with another mini-adventure and a swell new
friend. Just by going to the beach. I hope you enjoy the
pictures and the next time you get bored come to California and go to the
beach with me. Reservations are going quickly so hurry. See you
soon.
Peace,
Sean
