Tom Petty | Classic Leftcoastlove

Dateline Berkeley CA September 30, 2006 - Last night Tom Petty and I had a moment, I don't know if he recognized it but I sure did. It was an early fall evening 25 years ago that I first saw Tom Petty play live.

Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY was the venue and I was fortunate enough to have seats in the second row orchestra pit. I was literally at the feet of a much younger Tom. At that time I wasn't much of a fan, in fact I was more excited about being that close at the show. That changed in about 30 seconds because The Heartbreakers won me over with their tightness and bombast. After that show I bought every album, yes they were on vinyl back then, and I made my schedule free for every live show. Now I can't even remember how many times I've seen him over the years.

My old friend Brian and I chatted last night before the show via cell phone. Brian was setting up to play a show with his band in the Albany area. Back in high school Brian had another band and they performed a healthy mix of Petty tunes with great precision. Brian and I celebrated our shared love of the music and band then it was over. Tom and the boys swept onto the stage and my attention shifted to this show and this moment. I know I sound like a broken record but some things can only happen in California, a slivered moon sinks into the crisp night while Tom Petty and special guest Stevie Nicks share a microphone.

Frank Black gets us warmed up...

The show began with a nice set from Frank Black. His blend of storytelling and guitars was a perfect match but unfortunately the late arriving crowd missed most of his set. I apologize for the quality of the photos but I have an excuse. I actually have a new camera with a zoom but I was positioned at the very top of the theater. So basically any advantage I gained with my new camera was negated by the fact I was twice my usual distance from the stage.

If you get a chance I suggest you give Frank Black a try. He is in the Petty-Dylan mold but he uses those influences only as the canvas for his special brand of storytelling.

Tom and the Heartbreakers

Tom and his band mates literally blew onto the stage. Lights, cameras, and multiple video screens bathed the audience in all things jangly. I was excited that he dusted off some deep tracks that included two duets with Stevie Nicks. While I'm on the subject I should mention that Stevie is back to her early 80's fighting weight. She brought that look back too wearing a her signature "witch wear" resplendent with feather stovepipe hat. It was 25 year ago, at least for those moments.

I guess that's why I continue to usher at the various concert venues, music, especially live music, bridges time and space. It can take you anywhere you want to go if you just open you heart. For some people this is harder to do than you might think which is why I think Tom calls his band "The Heartbreakers". You gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet and Tom has made it his mission to break a few hearts to make timeless music. Happy 25th Tom and here's to another!
