Yo ho ho and a bottle in a handbag. Last night I was treated to some local theater. An original comedy written and produced by The Thunderbird Theatre group was being staged just a few blocks from my apartment. Traci and I amped up and headed out for the fun. The theater was a warehouse space re-done to give the feel of a pirate ship. The audience was literally onboard with the cast. Full contact art matey!
It was
obvious that the cast was having as much fun as the audience. The
pirates were jolly, the maidens were fine wenches and the villain was oh so
evil. The performances were over the top and in my opinion the stand
out was the portrayal of "Girly Pete". This pirate spoke in such a way
that only the other pirates could understand him. His tights were very
tight and his choice of color was very unpirate (pink, purple, and
turquoise) but this only made him funnier. Where else but in San
Francisco could you find a pirate such as this?
The Thunderbirds (as they call themselves) appear to be a family. They do everything in these productions and the money they make goes right back into the group for the next show. The sets were simple but invoked the correct feel and there was even a pirate chorus. Not a singing chorus but a chorus in the Greek tradition, they chime in at key times with appropriate "D'Arrrs and gasps. Basically a fine fun way to spend a Monday evening. Seating is limited so if you are interested you better get over here http://www.thunderbirdtheatre.com and grab some tickets. It's not professional but in the spirit of the Olympics we all should support the amateurs who do it for the love. From what I know these folks have regular jobs and families but they still manage to find time and energy to make their art. We need more people in the world who use their spare time for art, my hat's off to these people who have left their couches and remotes lonely and unused.
